Self-care is more than the things we do for ourselves. It also encompasses how we speak to ourselves. Do you criticize yourself in ways that would make you cringe if you heard a loved one describing themselves in unforgiving, harsh ways?

Dr. Karen Neff identifies 3 components of self-compassion.

  1. Mindfulness, or being present with and validating the pain you are feeling
  2. Reminding yourself of your own humanity
  3. Bring in some kindness through physical touch, and by saying something kind to yourself that you need to hear in this moment

This self-compassion break can be done in less than 5 minutes:

When you or a loved one cannot release uncharitable self-talk, therapy can help overcome negative beliefs preventing you from earning the self-compassion you deserve.
